2tuOn March 22 World Water Day is celebrated around the globe.  It is a very important date where the international community and governments can evaluate the efforts made -and achieved- so every single human being has access to sufficient and safe water, a basic human right.

“Water affects all aspects of human life, from health and sanitation to the food that we eat, from our environment and ecosystems to the industry and energy that power our development. Yet this vital resource is under threat,” states Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO on the occasion of World Water Day 2009: Transboundary Waters (click here to read the entire message)

The Local Relevance of Human Rights

Since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on December 10th 1948, numerous international documents have reaffirmed human rights as global norms. But do human rights offer real protection when disadvantaged groups invoke them at the local level in an attempt to improve their living conditions?

Debating Development 2008 ‘How decent is the global village?’

This coming year, the Non-Governmental Organisations will focus on “decent life, decent work”, aligning themselves to the initiatives taken by the World Social Forum in 2007. In this way, the NGO-movement rephrases its earlier focus on the Millennium Development Goals in a number of ways. Emphasis shifts again to the socio-economic determinants of the poverty phenomenon. At the same time, the campaign tries to build an alliance with other social movements to further development.
